One of my fellow bloggers recently asked ‘what is success?’ One answer may be – when one is the target of an ode. Last night 35 joggers finished their nine-week beginners’ course with a 5k run around darkest St Clement, Jersey. One of them, Juliette Hart, was moved to poetry. It must surely rocket Juliette into contention for the next Poet Laureate.
It’s bleak out there, the rain won’t stop,
but still we lace our trainers up.
The tide is high, wind at full throttle,
time to fill your water bottle.
7pm at the Burger Bar –
we’ll start off gentle, not go too far.
We won’t be put off by the weather:
Jersey Joggers run together.
A minute soon becomes 2…3…4
we’re walking less, we’re running more
5…6…7…8…9…10
we finish our session – let’s do it again!
The sunsets fade, each week it’s darker
but we’re off the couch, 5k’s our marker.
We won’t be put off by the weather:
Jersey Joggers run together.
Roy’s whistle blows, we turn around,
dodging puddles on the ground.
We stop a cyclist in his track,
there really is no looking back.
We’re running strong with no resistance
to the bright green light in the distance.
We won’t be put off by the weather:
Jersey Joggers run together.
Roy McCarthy is the man
who inspired us with his plan
to encourage all that they can run
by setting a pace and by making it fun.
THANK YOU ROY we passed the test,
and wear with pride our high-viz vest!
Congratulations to all of the joggers! I love Juliette’s poem and kudos to you, Roy!

Yes Jean it does sum up very well the fun the group have had over the course of the nine weeks as the misgivings and trepidation have fallen away.

Not many people write off-the-cuff poetry these days – Juliette must have knocked that out in 20 minutes or so.

I could let you have the local franchise AMB, though you’d need your own poet 🙂

That is a really fun poem Roy which has the right tempo for jogging along to – well done Juliette for that, and well done to all the Jersey Joggers 🙂

Thanks Jenny, it’s pretty good I must say. And, having had 35 or so joggers complete the programme on Wednesday I’m lining up another for January. No wonder my writing lags a bit.

Love the poem, Roy- congrats to you and all involved! I love the image of stopping the cyclist in his tracks (can just imagine the look on his face when he saw all of you!).

Thanks Letizia. Glad you brought up the matter of the cyclist. He was behind our group and decided to cut onto a grassed area to overtake. Next thing he’d hit a tree stump or something, flew up in the air and landed on his shoulder. Fortunately he walked away with just a bent bike and a suspected dislocated shoulder. Could have been worse.

Hi Lisa – other way round, I’m inspired by the achievements of those who I simply guide and point in the right direction. Writing…it would be nice to think so.

Jersey continues to fascinate me.
By the way, I’m really loving Tess, Roy! I’ve enjoyed seeing this character develop, how she takes life by the balls and well…she seizes every day, and I love that. The Jersey occupation has been super interesting for me to read – definitely a less discussed WWII chapter.
Sorry I’m so slow to finish…damn job, life, writing, etc. Promise to leave a review when I’m done. : )

Thanks Britt – I’m pleased you haven’t thrown it in a corner 🙂 Yes I like my Tess character and didn’t want to let her go after ‘Midsummer’. Believe me the Occupation is well documented but I guess mainly within the CIs themselves. Best wishes from rather a windy island this morning.
