OK, I need your help. I need a title for my new novel which is nearing completion.
It’s a novel based on what I know of human trafficking and modern slavery. A young woman and her friend are trafficked from a Nepal village to Kolkata, India. They are forced to do sex work in a brothel there. Her story is told through her own eyes. One of her frequent laments is ‘My god is dead.’
In the unfolding of the story I try to explain the reasons behind this ghastly trade, all of which are, of course, financial. The grim truth is basic economics.
I have narrowed it down to a choice of two, both of which would carry the sub-title along the lines ‘A story of the world’s most inhumane trade.’
Thank you for taking the time to vote.
Of the two titles provided, I would choose “My God is Dead”, but it’s really hard to name a book without having read it since a title is like the ultimate synopsis of the story.
The one bit of advice I can offer is to consider the mood you want to create with the title. Were I to pick up a book called “My God is Dead”, I wouldn’t be expecting it to have any kind of positive (or somewhat positive) outcome for the main character. It seems rather bleak. But maybe that’s what you’re going for.
You could trying looking up other novels with similar subject matter on Amazon or Goodreads to see what kinds of titles they use. Titles can be tough so I feel your pain. Good luck!

Thanks for this Janna. Para 2 is very relevant, thank you. Maybe a re-think there.

I will suggest one in a day or two 🙂

I’m terrible with titles, Roy. My publisher never goes with the ones I suggest. I think Janna has some great advice, though.

I chose the title My God is Dead because I assumed that it’s a dark and edgy and sad novel all the way through. But Jenna gives you good advice. Of course you know I always love a good ending, so if the second part is more positive and life affirming, I suggest a different title.

Thank you Pam. Both you and Janna give good advice. I don’t want to turn potential readers away so I’ll consider both title and sub-title in that light.

“My God is Dead” is very emotive and I would want to read the book. It might not appeal to some people who have a strong faith. Perhaps you could work around it – Where is my God, for example.

And the other thing, would it be god or God? Like the poll I’m edging towards Supply & Demand – with a sub-title or it would sound like an economics text book.

Good luck, whatever your choose. Who knew that 50 shades of gray would be a bestseller???
