Suddenly accelerating into top gear as Saturday’s opening ceremony races towards us. Competitors are jetting in – early arrivals included the Faroes and Greenland – and the months of paper planning are becoming a reality.
Howard Davis Park is serving as the Games village as well as hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. The giant stage has been built and provides the focal point of the week-long entertainment. It will be left in place to accommodate Spandau Ballet who perform the day after the Games finishes.
But already there are logistical difficulties. The thousands of visitors are not all arriving on neatly-packaged charter flights and the Meet & Greet and Transport teams are having to think on their feet. And, worryingly, the flight of the Falklands team – the team I’m looking after – to England has been delayed due to bad weather in the South Atlantic. Fingers crossed that they get away before too long.

Thankfully they’ve left a day or so buffer so we’ll see. Weather here is set fair but we can’t control it elsewhere 🙂

I hope you enjoy the games and that they don’t prove to be too much of an inconvenience for the locals. As someone whose city has hosted the Olympics in recent years, the thrill of large sporting events often wears off fast.

Janna this will be manna from Heaven for our local grumblers 🙂 They won’t have a kind word to say about this great event, only how much it’s costing, how they have been inconvenienced etc. But really it’s all concentrated into six frenetic days and all our visitors will have left by next Saturday night, so not like the Olympics spread over several weeks. It’ll be grand.

How interesting. I’d never heard of the Natwest Island Games before (I know next to nothing about sports in general and I also don’t live on an island). It sounds like it was exciting!

It’s a very unique event – and the biggest sporting event anywhere in the world this year. The sport has only just begun but it’s fantastic already. I’m desperately trying to find time to post further blogs as the days are full-on right now 🙂
