‘Where do you all come from?’ – Mott The Hoople
One of WordPress’s most interesting stats is ‘hits by country’. In an idle moment I checked out my hits for the last year. In percentage terms here they are –
United States 23.8
United Kingdom 19.6
Jersey 19.3
Ireland 17.6
Canada 6.1
Australia 3.2
France 1.2
New Zealand 1.2
Brazil 0.8
Germany 0.7
Guernsey 0.7
Other 5.8

In some instances surprising. The US is a big-ass country (as Britt would say) but I wonder if it has a higher percentage of bloggers. A lot of hits from my home island but I have no idea who they might be from as they are happy to lurk, which is fine. UK and Ireland I’d expect to be up there.
But hello out there in Brazil and Germany – and especially in Guernsey, our neighbours Who Time Forgot 😉
Any surprising numbers from fellow bloggers out there?

I just looked at mine and what fascinated me where the countries I only got one hit from (Trinidad and Tobago, Nepal, Zimbabwe). I wonder what brought them to my blog (too bad they didn’t return!).

Hi Letizia – yes I got a heap of those too. I’m pretty sure that a percentage of all hits are by people idly surfing and landing by accident. It would be sad if they took one look and scarpered, never to return 🙂

Yes, your US viewership is much the same as Jill’s (above). It’s a pity they don’t sub-divide it by state really. You might find surprises there – HI instead of PA? Do you know people, or have relatives in India?

I’d love the see the breakdown by state. As for India, I have lots of friends and family friends there, but no relatives. Most of my friends and family don’t know about my blog or my writing, though (at least not from me). So, it does actually make me a little nervous to see that I’ve gotten quite a few views from Sri Lanka, where I have lots of relatives.

Roy, your post made me take a look at my stats for the first time in months. It’s cool to see that people are still finding my blog posts, even though I haven’t posted since January. I must admit that I miss it! Anyway, the countries summary was always a favourite of mine. This is what I have:
Canada – 42%
US – 32%
UK – 7%
Australia – 2%
India – 2%
Philippines – 1%
Other – 14%
My very favourite part if this is that the “Other” represents 128 countries. Three cheers for the blogosphere. Thanks for reminding me of this.

Every once in awhile I look at the chart and see how my blog has been read in different parts of the world. It just makes me feel…connected. In a wonderful way. Because of your question, I looked over the list of readers from different countries over the past several months. Ignoring those who are just ‘1 view,’ (like Kazakhstan and Uganda), I’m amazed to see 6 or more hits from places like Panama, Sudan, Yemen and Kuwait. How I’d love to know their reaction to my very American posts.

Indeed Pam. Maybe you have a reader in Yemen who has read your exciting books and has become a fan! Not all blog readers want to comment or engage and it is intriguing to know how they came by your blog, and why they hang around.

This is fun to look up. I used to check out my country stats all the time, because it surprised me to see that my writing was going international, way beyond my friends and family in the States. That’s the beauty of blogging though.
Here are my all-time stats (a little over 2 years). I’ve had the same top three consistently. Yay, Jersey at #5!

That’s an interesting spread Britt! Those figures indicate a solid readership in other countries. Certainly I don’t stalk you to the extent of visiting five days out of seven 😮 so you must have other Jersey fans. Presumably (like Andrea below) some Jersey viewers have arrived at your blog via mine, so I claim commission 🙂

I have a very long list for the last year. My top three are the US, Canada, and the UK. Then, surprisingly, Brazil is #4 followed by Australia and Jersey (you!)
I’ve also had multiple visits from Korea, Russia, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Pakistan, Syria, Vietnam, and Israel, to name a few. Amazing to think that people from such diverse countries have read some of my words!

Hi Janna, like others I’m sure I’m not your only Jersey stalker but possibly I was a conduit. It’s fascinating how we are connected to complete strangers, some of whom stay and become – if not friends – sort of acquaintances whether or not they engage with comments.

Roy, the vast majority of my readers come from the US – over 3,000 in the last year compared to the next highest, which is the UK (nearly 800) and then Canada (400). I’ve had 123 views from Jersey, so either you’re a very regular visitor, or I’ve got some other Jersey viewers 🙂 The list of countries is amazing though – I’m quite impressed I’ve got views from places like Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Rwanda!

Wow that surprises me Andrea. I imagined that – like me – the UK would be much closer to, if not higher than, the US. Of course the way we gather readers is mainly organic, via other bloggers, so you’ve created a snowball in the US. I’m pleased that Jersey is figuring in people’s lists but it certainly isn’t all me – I do have a life away from the laptop 🙂

This year, I’ve had hits from 85 countries but, to my great surprise, more from the UK than the US. Also, in my top 10 are Russia and Saudi Arabia!

Hi Sarah – but you’re a UK resident aren’t you? I’m guessing that (like my Jersey readers) your UK readers don’t put their heads above the parapet. But it is great to be able to engage with our US counterparts. Russia and Saudi eh? I can’t say that I can boast likewise 🙂

I’ve just had a look at my stats since I started my blog in 2012. The UK and US are fairly even keel taken over a two-year period.

Ah yes, much the same pattern as me with UK/US. Canada shows up strongly as well in both. I’m impressed with South Africa and Saudi!

I love stats and demographics. I’m looking at Canada with about 6% of your readership and U.S.A. with 24%, yet they have 10 times our population. Per capita, those Americans don’t know what there missing!! 🙂

Thanks Bruce, it’s certainly intriguing trying to interpret the stats. And I wonder if loss of memory/Alzheimer’s can ever be a good thing – I’m ignorant in that area but maybe it’s more upsetting sometimes for the carers than it is for the affected. Best wishes Bruce.
