The Germans are coming, heavy gunfire is heard from France. The people of the Channel Islands have heard about Nazi atrocities elsewhere in Europe. Arrangements are made to transport to England those that wish to leave. What to do – escape to safe shores but leave behind friends, family, job, everything you know? Or stay and risk what is to come? 23,000 Jersey residents registered to leave, 6,500 actually left. What would you do?
Sue du Feu’s lovely short (14:40) film Togo portrays the dilemma of the Jersey islanders. It is a pilot for what she hopes will be a TV series, though the days of quality drama seem to be behind us. Let me know what you think of it. (It may be a bit jerky and it plays much better if you download it – the password is togotogo).
Such a touching film. I’m a huge dog lover so I was really moved by this story but I think anyone would be moved by the characters and could see this as a tv series. It is so beautifully filmed as well.
One of my favorite scenes, and this doesn’t give anything away, is the dinner scene with the napkin and the sausage – too cute 🙂
Thank you for sharing this lovely short film.

Thanks for taking the time to watch Letizia. I don’t like dogs but I was moved as well. It’s a little classic isn’t it, and I hope Sue goes on to build on it.

Wow, that video was excellent. Gripping. I had never known anything at all about the German invasion prior to reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. That read and then your two great reads about Jersey set me up for this. Seeing the scenery, the architecture, and the period feel was all top notch. Give us more!!!

Thank you Jane, Sue will be very pleased and encouraged. I was struck immediately by the period feel – exactly as I imagined it.

Oh thanks for that. I love war drama, and history in general. I`ll watch it later this evening-morning rush on now-and get back to you about it.

Enjoyed the film – I’m sure there would be mileage in a series about the occupation. Like Jane, I’ve read the Potato Peel Society book and found that very moving. We need more of these “docu-dramas” to keep the memories alive.

You’re so right Jenny because the few that are left are fading fast. Fortunately those years are still fiercely celebrated in the CIs and are very well recorded. Yes I hope Sue has some luck in pitching her idea.

I certainly hope the days of quality drama aren’t behind us! I don’t have time for much television right now, but I do miss having a show or two to follow. I’ll check out the film when I get home.
